Today I left Calheta harbour with a small group of guests to guide on my first snorkelling excursion for Lobosonda. Portuguese law allows institutes like ours to offer snorkelling sessions with two cetacean species: Common dolphins, that we tend to swim with in the winter months and Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, our “summer dolphins”. During today’s excursion we encountered BOTH species, making this day special for me and for our guests, as it’s relatively rare to meet both species in one snorkelling tour. The dolphins came rather close to us and we could hear them communicate underwater using squeaks and clicks. The events of the day emphasised, once again, how intelligent and gentle these animals are!
