Our journey began with the winds whispering tales of these playful marine wonders frolicking in the crystal-clear Atlantic waters surrounding this picturesque Portuguese archipelago.
However, the sea is a vast expanse, and spotting these swift and acrobatic dolphins from the land proved to be quite the challenge. Our dedicated spotter, scoped the whole ocean, yearning for a glimpse of the sleek dorsal fins breaking the surface.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow on the ocean, we realized that the task at hand required a more specialised approach. The decision was made to drive a little bit further out than usual and search for ourselves.
The moment finally arrived when the air buzzed with excitement – a small pod of Common dolphins (Delphinus Delphis) gracefully emerged, dancing in the waves. Did you know that these dolphins engage in cooperative hunting, working together to corral and capture their prey? Their sleek bodies adorned with playful splashes, a spectacle of nature’s grace as they engaged in surface hunting manoeuvres.
They swim in the ocean in tight-knit pods, showcasing their agility and synchronised movements. It’s fascinating to note that these dolphins can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h, making them a true spectacle to witness in their natural habitat. They are often attracted to boats, riding the bow waves and showcasing their playful antics.
This encounter not only deepened our appreciation for the ocean’s wonders but also highlighted the importance of responsible and sustainable tourism to preserve the magic for generations to come.
