With only one scheduled trip for the day and a calm sea, we set off aboard STENELLA. Our cruising speed is normally around 20 knots, but early in the trip we were unexpectedly approached by a small group of common short-beaked dolphins (Delphinus delphis). Shortly after we received information from our spotter that 500m further south, in almost the same observation area, there was also a small group of Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). There was no need to increase speed, as we left the first group and started to observe the other specie. Finally, and not long after, we again received information from land that at 1nm there were Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus). These where traveling west and with a small adjustment of course and speed we had the group in place, all species on this trip where at the “doorstep” ….
