“How to identify a new species?” That was one of the questions on board the RB, this morning, by one of our guests…. After observing very close to shore, a small pod of Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) as they are very similar to Long-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus capensis). Scientific and genetic researchers are able to establish and classify new species or sub-species by determining habitat, natural barriers and migration patterns through DNA analysis, taking only a minimum percentage of variation in the DNA chain. Obviously this can only be done in controlled environments. Their work contributes and enhances general knowledge about all living beings. A big thank’s from our front desk… the Ocean! ?
