If there is the chance of fishing rubbish out of the water, we are pleased to do it. As we did today. Most of the worldwide waste reaches the Oceans via rivers. Fortunately around Madeira we are far away from such big “islands of garbage” as they occur for example in the Pacific (great pacific garbage patch). But still, for some of the marine inhabitants, already a small plastic bag can cause tremendous problems.
The guests of the snorkeling trip had to be patient in the morning. Only when the feeding frenzy of the dolphins was over, they were able to glide in the water, observing Atlantic spotted dolphins from a underwater perspective.
At the eastern horizont we saw a strange object. It was definitely no ship, neither a fata morgana. But what was it then? Filipe, our skipper knew: it was a oil rig, which was moving at a snail’s pace direction open sea.
