Rete mirabilis sounds mysterious. Like something that has been projected into life by the magical lantern. In fact, it is also full of mystery and miracles, which is why it is also called wonderful net. But what’s up with this magical entity?
The Rete mirabilis is an organ of the Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), which is responsible for the oxygen storage and the pressure equalization. This reticular system of fine blood vessels is located in connective tissue that is permeated with fat cells and lymphatic cells. Actually, it looks more like a sponge. Rete mirabilis is found in the brain, neck, thoracic cavity and spine. The atria are super muscular, the veins extremely flexible. The veins take on the important task of balancing blood pressure fluctuations. Very good, because it provides a better and more consistent blood and thus oxygenation of the brain. The Rete mirabilis is a prominent oxygen storage that gradually releases this vital elixir into the fatty tissue.
The Rete Mirabilis of the Sperm whale has three very important tasks: 1. Oxygen storage 2. Compensation of pressure fluctuations 3. Fill material for cavities.
How wondrous, wonderful are the Sperm whales that we saw today on all of our tours … interesting to know that in their rete mirabilis, they enrich the oxygen which, when they majestically raise their fluke, will help them do the dives they need to go in search of tasty squid.
