Today was our second guide Peter’s first day at work. And he got off to a very good beginning. Three different species, a perfect start. So here is a warm welcome. We saw Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), Risso dolphins (Grampus griseus) and a Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus).
While our spotted dolphins are here seasonally in summer, the round-headed dolphins are considered rare visitors. The fin whale, on the other hand, only passes through here briefly. Such sightings are sometimes only possible during a tour. You should savour this encounter. It’s like a snapshot. Of course, we also have resident animals. These include bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins and pilot whales. Seasonal resident animals plus the rare visitors and animals travelling through create a great diversity of marine mammals off Madeira’s coast.
