Today, the Atlantic Spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) had the upper hand on our tours. These lively, small marine mammals delight our guests every time. Also on our evening tour with the Ribeira Brava were big and small thrilled! What a fun, when these dolphins jump over waves with their small round and fat bodies, spurting into the bow wave and making the guests laugh. For us as a crew, the joy of our guests is a delightful experience.
And here’s a little info: Some people think slim may be desirable, especially in summer, when the bikini figure is desired. This is not the case for marine mammals!
The ocean is a habitat of extremes! He is deep, he is far, he is cold! Even in temperate and (sub) tropical zones, the body cools down after a while. For homoeothermic (warm-blooded) animals whose habitat is the sea, there must therefore be an effective heat insulation. In whales and dolphins, a very thick layer of fat assumes the function of uniform temperature maintenance. This subcutaneous fatty tissue is called a “blubber”. For some whales this fat layer can be up to 70cm thick. You see, a diet is not desirable! 🙂
